Whole Foods CEO John Mackey to speak at two Emory campus events

Whole Foods Co-Founder and CEO John Mackey will be on campus April 10-11 to engage with Emory students and the wider community through two public programs presented by the Emory Center for Ethics.

“Ethics at the Table: Is Eating Meat Ethical and Healthy?” will offer a public debate featuring Emory students that addresses the ethics of eating animal products. The event will take place April 10 at 7 p.m. in the Rollins Auditorium of the Claudia Nance Rollins Building, 401 Rollins Way.

Following a format he’s employed at other universities, the debate will match Mackey and Bruce Friedrich, co-founder and CEO of the Good Food Institute, and Mackenzie Aime and Isaac Goldman, Emory students from Emory’s Eating Ethics course and winners of the International Sustainability Case Study in Parma, Italy.

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. For more information or to register, visit here

The next morning, Conscious Capitalism Atlanta (CC-ATL) and the Emory Center for Ethics will team up to host a breakfast event featuring “A Conversation with John Mackey: Leadership and Culture through the Purpose Lens,” wherein Mackey will share his insights on the founding of Conscious Capitalism, an international organization that advocates thinking about capitalism and business through an ethical lens with conscious leaders who are galvanized by higher purposes that serve, align and integrate the interests of all their major stakeholders.

The opening program will examine the four guiding Conscious Capitalism principles — higher purpose; stakeholder orientation; conscious leadership; and conscious culture — with a particular focus on “purpose.”

The second part of the program will continue that focus, exploring the power of purpose in business through a panel discussion with Mackey and Atlanta-based business leaders, including Cheryl Grise, Southeast advisory managing partner of Ernst and Young LLP; Shane Jackson, president of Jackson Healthcare; and Alexandra Wagner, chief purpose ambassador for SunTrust Bank.

The Conscious Capitalism Atlanta chapter was co-founded in 2017 by Jagdish Sheth, the Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Marketing at Emory’s Goizueta School of Business, and international business consultant and Goizueta Business School alumnus Jim Hartzfeld. Today, the organization is part of a world-wide movement with international headquarters based in San Francisco and chapters around the world.

The programs run from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on April 11 at the Silverbell Pavilion at the Emory Conference Center Hotel, 1615 Clifton Road. Breakfast begins at 7 a.m.; the program follows at 7:30 a.m.

The event is $30 and open to the public, but registration is required by April 5. To learn more or register, visit here.
