Lauren Winner to speak at Women's Forum

Author, priest and professor Lauren Winner will be the distinguished guest speaker for the 2017 Annual Women’s Forum sponsored by Candler School of Theology’s Women, Theology, and Ministry program.

Winner will speak on “Cardigan Sweaters, Magnolia Trees, and Brioche: Overlooked Biblical Metaphors for God” on Nov. 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Cannon Chapel sanctuary. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Register here.

Winner, an Episcopal priest and assistant professor of Christian spirituality at Duke Divinity School, has authored numerous books, including “Girl Meets God: On the Path to a Spiritual Life” (2002), “Mudhouse Sabbath: An Invitation to a Life of Spiritual Discipline” (2003), “Still: Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis” (2012), and “Wearing God: Clothing, Laughter, Fire, and Other Overlooked Ways of Meeting God” (2015).

The daughter of a Jewish father and a Southern Baptist mother, Winner was raised Jewish, then converted to Christianity and was baptized into the Anglican Church while pursing a master of philosophy at Cambridge University. She writes and lectures on Christian practice, the history of Christianity in America, and Jewish–Christian relations.

She has appeared on PBS’s “Religion & Ethics Newsweekly” and has served as a commentator on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” She has written for The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Book World, Publishers Weekly, Books and Culture, and Christianity Today, and her essays have been included in several volumes of The Best Christian Writing.
