Emory monitoring 'WannaCry' ransomware attacks; employees encouraged to update Windows

Editor's note: In response to recent ransomware attacks, Library and Information Technology Services (LITS) and Emory Healthcare Information Services issued the following message to the Emory community on May 13.

Many of you may have heard news reports over the weekend about widespread "WannaCry" ransomware attacks that have impacted organizations worldwide, including the U.K.'s National Health Service.

As of now we are unaware of this ransomware attack negatively impacting Emory. However, Library and Information Technology Services (LITS) and Emory Healthcare Information Services are monitoring the situation closely and taking steps to prevent a compromise of Emory systems.

During these efforts it's possible that a limited number of computers will need to be patched or rebooted at inconvenient times. We apologize if you're inconvenienced by this, but appreciate your patience.

If you are responsible for managing your own desktop/laptop, we ask that you ensure you've installed the latest Windows updates, and that your anti-virus software is up to date. Members of the Emory community are also highly encouraged to ensure that your personal devices are updated as well.

Finally, we would like to remind everyone to never open email attachments or click on links that you receive via email that are either unexpected, or from unexpected sources. Many viruses are spread in this manner, including "WannaCry."
