Undergraduate Research Week begins Monday at Emory

Emory College’s annual Undergraduate Research Week returns Monday, April 17, with a series of events to showcase students’ work across the range of disciplines in the College and beyond.

The six-day event is free and open to the public, with the goal that non-research students and others who are interested will attend sessions outside their areas of study, says Folashade Alao, co-director of Undergraduate Research Programs.

“As a liberal arts college within a research university, Emory provides undergraduates with numerous opportunities to engage research, from research-infused courses and assistantships to independent inquiries,” Alao says. “Students are exposed to the research of faculty that is both cutting edge and dynamic in breadth.”

The events start with the Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology Symposium from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday in the Dobbs University Center Commons.

On Tuesday, the Undergraduate Research Programs Symposium will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Math Science Center lobby. Also Tuesday, an hour-long Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis alumni career panel will be held at 4 p.m. in Whitehead Auditorium, with a reception and networking to follow.

A campus-wide Research Symposium will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Math Science Center lobby.

On Thursday, the Biology Research Symposium and poster session will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Atwood Science Commons. It concludes with a keynote address from evolutionary biologist Hopi Hoeskstra of Harvard University at 5 p.m. in White Hall, room 208.

Undergraduate Research Programs also will host a Research Partners Program information session at 4 p.m. Wednesday in White Hall, room 206.

The Chemistry Research Symposium, featuring short talks, begins at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Atwood Chemistry Center, room 360. Robert McMahon, an organic chemist from the University of Wisconsin, will deliver a keynote address at 2 p.m., followed by a poster session from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Atwood Science Commons.

The events conclude on Monday, April 24, with the Psychology Undergraduate Research Symposium from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Psychology Building lobby and room 280.
