Time-lapse video shows Oxford sand mandala's creation, destruction

Monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery were in residence Feb. 20-24 at Emory's Oxford College campus, constructing a traditional Tibetan Buddhist sand mandala in the library.

The mandala's construction could be viewed in person in the library or live online via webcast. Now, this time-lapse video collapses five days of work into a few intriguing minutes, from the first chalk lines laying out the intricate design to the completed mandala's destruction in a ritual swirl of color.

The monks’ appearance was sponsored by Oxford’s Pierce Program in Religion and part of the Mystical Arts of Tibet tour to promote the monastery and the artistic activities of Tibet.

Tibet Week on Emory's Atlanta campus is set for March 20-25 and includes the construction of a sand mandala in the Michael C. Carlos Museum. The creation of the mandala can be viewed in the museum from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, March 20, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
