Emory increases cybersecurity with Duo Two-Factor Authentication

A new security feature will soon be required for access to Emory’s systems from off campus locations. Emory’s Libraries and Information Technology Services (LITS) is implementing Duo Security Two-Factor Authentication to enhance cybersecurity measures.

“Two-factor authentication enhances security by using a second device to verify your identity,” explains Rich Mendola, enterprise chief information officer and senior vice provost of library services. “It prevents anyone but you from accessing your account even if they know your password.”

Recently, Emory has experienced a number of security breaches with PeopleSoft HR/Employee Self-Service/e-Vantage due to phishing. “We are implementing this enhanced security to help protect the confidential information of our faculty, staff and students, making them less vulnerable to the consequences of falling for a phishing scam,” says Mendola.

By Aug. 8, all Emory users will need to be enrolled in Duo in order to access PeopleSoft HR (Employee Self-Service/ e-Vantage) from an offsite location that is not connected by an Emory network. The system is used for numerous human resources functions including leave tracking, direct deposit, viewing paychecks and performance management.

By Oct. 10, users will need to be enrolled in Duo to access other systems including Office365 (email) and OPUS. Duo is already required for access to VPN, and those who enrolled in Duo earlier in the year for VPN access do not need to enroll again.

“We encourage everyone to enroll as soon as possible, even those who don’t usually need access to Emory’s systems from off campus,” adds Mendola. “The primary benefit of enrolling is that your confidential information is more secure. Hackers are getting increasingly more sophisticated, making it easier to fall for phishing scams. Duo adds another level of security to keep hackers from accessing your information.”
