Panel to discuss the role of research universities in addressing microaggressions

“Ethics, Responsibility and Microaggressions: The Role of the Research University” is the topic for this spring’s Conversation with the Dean sponsored by the Laney Graduate School.

It will be held Monday, April 18, at 12:15 p.m. in the Rita Anne Rollins Building, Room 252, at the Candler School of Theology.

Laney Dean Lisa Tedesco will moderate a discussion featuring Robert M. Franklin, Jr., the James T. and Berta R. Laney Professor in Moral Leadership at Candler; Claire E. Sterk, Emory provost and vice president for academic affairs; and Paul Root Wolpe, director of the Emory Center for Ethics and Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Bioethics.

They will consider the issue of fostering an environment that is diverse and inclusive while addressing microaggressions in the classrooms, laboratories and field settings.

Some of the questions to be addressed include:

  • What is the right response to a microaggression incident?
  • Who is the appropriate responder?
  • Does a research university, such as Emory, bear an ethical responsibility to address microaggressions?
  • How does the university ensure preparation of students, faculty and staff to address microaggressions in order to advance collegiality?

Box lunches will be provided so attendees are asked to RSVP.
