Students can find last-minute help and services at the Emory Libraries

As students head into focused studying and paper-writing for their final exams, the staff at Woodruff Library has compiled a helpful list of library services that students commonly need between now and the end of finals.

Quiet study space and group study rooms

For students in search of quiet study space, the Matheson Reading Room (called “the Harry Potter room” by some students) is a classic library space for quiet study, as is the adjacent lobby area with plush seating. Stack tower floors 4, 5 and 8 are also designated as quiet study, with lounge areas and open study carrels (the ones marked “assigned” are reserved). Levels 1 and 2 are open and collaborative spaces, and conversation is not limited here.

Group study rooms, both in the Woodruff Library and the Computing Center at Cox Hall, can be reserved by using the Student Digital Life Resource Scheduler. Students who need to practice an end-of-the-year presentation will appreciate room 213 in the Woodruff Library. This space enables students to practice and record their presentations for immediate playback or for later review.

Phone chargers, laptops and other gadgets

Laptops and cellphones often run low on power at the most inconvenient time. The Music & Media Library, located on the fourth floor above the front lobby entrance, has chargers and laptops available for checkout, as well as tablets, headphones, adaptors, calculators and other gadgets. Some are for in-library use only; more details and checkout information are provided on the Music & Media library equipment page.

Citation help

Students who need help citing sources for a paper can find quick answers to their questions in the library’s research guides on citing your sources. Also check out the library’s pro-version of EasyBib (this requires a current Emory login).

Databases

Students who need to check information in one of Woodruff Library’s databases can now search for it through discoverE, the library’s main search engine on the homepage, and refine the search by clicking on databases.

Library Simplified

When research questions come up during a  late-night study session, students can find answers at the Library Simplified page. This handy guide to the library’s resources helps students evaluate sources, find call numbers and corresponding floors, determine whether a book or an article is scholarly, conduct a search for materials, and more.

Subject librarians

Whether it’s citing a source, finding material (either physical or online), or using the library’s database system, Woodruff Library’s subject librarians are ready to help with any research or library questions.

A librarian is at the service desk to answer questions from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday during regular semesters, or students can browse the subject librarian page to contact the one in their specific subjects. Students studying away from the library can use the library’s Ask a Librarian online reference service; text a question to the Library Service Desk at (404) 994-3366, or call the desk at (404) 727-6873.

Printing services

Students who aren’t familiar with printing from their laptops to Emory’s wireless EaglePrint system will find all the details at the EaglePrint webpage. Information there includes how to download the installer and print, where the printers are located, how to put Eagle dollars on an Emory Card, and more. The library’s Student Digital Life division debuted the new wireless system last fall so students could leave their printers at home (one less thing to pack up once finals are over).

All of this information and much more can be found on the Woodruff Library website, including the hours of operation. The library is open 24 hours a day to current Emory students during the exam study period (from April 23-May 3), closing at 10 p.m. on May 4. Summer hours begin May 5.
