Emory University President James Wagner has announced two interim executive appointments prompted by the promotion of Michael J. Mandl, executive vice president for business and administration, to president and CEO for Emory Healthcare.

“As with any major leadership change, this appointment means that a critical opening in Emory’s executive leadership team needs to be addressed,” Wagner said in an email sent Friday morning to all university faculty, staff and students. “I am pleased to announce two interim appointments that will help ensure a smooth transition of executive leadership.”

Rich Mendola, currently enterprise chief information officer and senior vice provost for library services and digital scholarship, was appointed interim executive vice president for business and administration to replace Mandl.

“Rich has provided outstanding leadership for our information technology during the past decade and, more recently, for the libraries,” Wagner noted.

Marc Overcash, currently deputy chief information officer, will serve as interim enterprise chief information officer and senior vice provost for library services and digital scholarship to replace Mendola.

“Marc works closely with Rich and has been instrumental in developing enterprise solutions and best practices, especially in the areas of research technology support and informatics,” Wagner said.

Mandl, Mendola and Overcash will begin their new roles March 16.

Emory will conduct a national search to fill the position of executive vice president for business and administration, Wagner said.
