Bryce Gartland, MD, FHM, vice president of operations for Emory University Hospital and assistant professor of hospital medicine, has been named one of Modern Healthcare's Up & Comers for 2014. The annual list showcases 12 health care professionals each year, ages 40 and under, who have shown leadership qualities and business acumen that stand out among their peers, colleagues and hospital administrators.

Like many physicians, Gartland, now 39, entered medicine for the challenge of the profession and the desire to help others. Very soon in his career, he became interested in the business side of health care, and began lending his expertise on ways the system could provide better quality care for its patients, while supporting the needs of the health care providers in the field.

In 2012, Gartland was named vice president of operations for Emory Healthcare's flagship hospital, Emory University Hospital. He is responsible for the overall performance, planning, patient access, day-to-day staffing and operations of the hospital, which has more than 24,000 annual inpatient admissions, 3,330 full time employees and an annual revenue exceeding $780 million. He also serves as interim section director of the Division of Hospital Medicine and has been instrumental in helping Emory to build the largest academic hospital medicine program in the country, with more than 100 physician faculty members. In addition, Gartland is a full-time hospitalist, seeing patients frequently.

As an administrator, Gartland is focused on advancing the entire team to reach top successes together. "The key to outstanding health care is truly a team environment," says Gartland. "Without a tight, cohesive team, we disconnect from the patients, quality slips and we lose sight of our goals."

In his roles as VP of operations and interim section director, Gartland has worked hard to forge relationships between physicians and leadership. With that combination, he has been able to drive value within the hospital setting, both in quality care and financial performance. He feels that health care of the future demands physicians who can competently converse on both the clinical and business aspects of medicine. His dual roles of administrator and physician are paving the way for his physician colleagues to become immersed in hospital operations, and, like him, bring a unique perspective to the business of health care.

"Bryce's engaging and collaborative style makes him a natural leader within our organization," says Robert Bachman, CEO of Emory University Hospital. "He is well respected and superbly skilled in bridging the gaps and making this hospital operationally sound."

Before coming to Emory Healthcare in 2005, Gartland was an attending at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he also completed his internship and residency in internal medicine. He received his medical degree from Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
