Soiree stirs up excitement about arts and creativity

Catch the creative buzz at the Sixth Annual Creativity & Arts Soiree on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. The soiree celebrates the beginning of the Arts at Emory season with performances and activities.

The student portion of the event begins at 4 p.m., as part of the Pre-major Advising Connections at Emory (PACE) program, giving freshmen an opportunity to learn about arts programs and meet faculty and students in the arts.

This year ups the ante for student engagement. "We are planning something interactive in our studio," says Lori Teague, director of the Dance and Movement Studies Program, "driven by improvisation and composition."

ETV, Emory's student-run television station, will work a photo-video booth, asking students to don costumes and props and answer questions such as, "why are the arts important to you?"

On the lawn in front of the Schwartz Center, students can make T-shirts; enjoy improvisational music; collaborate on a work of art for Hamilton Holmes Hall, the "Creativity and Innovation"-themed freshman residence hall; or learn the basics of salsa dance from Emory Salsa Club.

At 6 p.m., the Schwartz Center will open up to the public for the 2013 Creativity & Arts Awards reception, held in the Chace Upper Lobby. During the reception, attendees can enjoy a musical performance or explore the departmental programming throughout the building. The awards presentation begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Creativity & Arts awards recognize Atlanta and Emory community members who have made a significant artistic and administrative contribution to the arts. View a list of the 2013 Creativity & Arts award winners.
