Moving out? Don't dump, donate

"Don't Dump It, Donate It" is Emory's annual end-of-year encouragement for students who are moving out to give away unwanted items instead of throwing them in the trash.

Clothing, school supplies, food and household items that students don't want to take with them for the summer are given to local Georgia charities.

Dates and locations for the drive are:

  • May 6-10 at the Dobbs University Center loading dock; Woodruff Residential Center; and behind The Complex of Hopkins, Smith and Thomas residence halls.

  • May 6-15 at Sorority Village and at Clairmont Tower.

Students are encouraged to donate their books to Better World, which collects books, sells them online through betterworldbooks.com and donates proceeds to its literary partners. Collection bins are at the Emory Recycling Center and Dobbs University Center.

Last year's drive collected a record 20,700 pounds of discarded items, according to Deena Keeler, assistant director of auxiliary services in Campus Services. Nothing was landfilled; everything was repurposed, she notes.

The donations will support these organizations:

  • American Kidney Fund, which helps dialysis patients with the costs associated with treating kidney failure.

  • Bread of Life Ministries, which provides clothing, furniture, household items and food to impoverished families in the Atlanta area.

  • International Refugee Council, which responds to international humanitarian crises.

  • The Haven House, which provides safe haven for battered women and children in the McDonough area.

The collection drives are sponsored by Emory Recycles, the Office of Sustainability Initiatives and Residence Life & Housing. For more information, call 404-727-9275.
