QuanTM features speakers on language, education and tax issues

QuanTM, Emory’s Institute for Quantitative Theory and Methods, offers a lunch speaker series. The speaker series will run on Wednesdays at noon, unless otherwise specified, in the Modern Languages Building conference room, Room 201.

Speakers include:

  • Lillian Lee of the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University, Wednesday, Sept. 26, on “Language as Influence(d): Power and Memorability.” Faculty and graduate students who are interested in meeting with Lee on the day of her talk should RSVP to iqtm@emory.edu by Sept. 24.  
  • Gary King of the Department of Government at Harvard University on Friday, Oct. 12, at 3 p.m. King oversees a research group that develops and applies empirical methods in areas of social science research, focusing on innovations that span the range from statistical theory to practical application.
  • David Figlio of the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University onWednesday, Oct. 24. Figlio’s research covers a wide range of educational and tax issues from school accountability and standards to welfare policy and policy design.

QuanTM also offers workshops:

  • The workshop session, "Scraping data from the Web," is Nov. 16 and Nov. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in ECIT 214. Qiaoling Liu and Yu Wang will talk about how to crawl web pages and PDF files from the web, and how to extract target information from the crawled raw data. Data scraping from Twitter and Wikipedia will be used as examples.  

QuanTM is a new institute in Emory College that offers courses, fellowships, events and more, as part of its vision to build stronger quantitative scholars and enhance interdisciplinary studies at Emory.
