China speaker series launched

Emory University’s Halle Institute for Global Learning is launching a new China Speaker Series, which will explore China’s political history in the midst of its extraordinary rise as a world power in the 21st century. A collaboration with the China Research Center and The Carter Center China Program, the series features a number of free public lectures by China experts throughout the spring. Seating is limited; registration is highly encouraged.

"Deng Xiaoping and His Opening to the World," Feb. 13

Ezra Vogel, the renowned scholar of modern Japan and China, will deliver the first lecture in the series Monday, Feb. 13 at 4:30 p.m. in the Joseph W. Jones Room, Robert W. Woodruff Library, 540 Asbury Circle. Vogel will discuss the legacy of Deng Xiaoping, who expanded China’s relationships with Europe, Japan, and the United States during his time in power (1978-1992).

"China's International Identities: Coping With a Conflicted Rising World Power," Feb. 22

As the world’s most important rising power, what kind of role will China take on the international stage? David Shambaugh, director of the China Policy Program at the George Washington University and a Brookings Institution fellow, will explore the domestic discourse in China concerning its international identities, linking these to alternative foreign policy postures that Beijing assumes on the world stage. Shambaugh’s lecture takes place at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, also in the Jones Room of Woodruff Library.

“The History of the Most Important Relationship in the World in 90 Minutes or Less: The United States and China,” March 19

Award-winning journalist John Pomfret will discuss China’s relationship with the United States Monday, March 19 at 4:30 p.m. in Boynton Auditorium, Goizueta Business School, 1300 Clifton Rd. Pomfret is the Asia diplomatic correspondent for The Washington Post and has been a foreign correspondent for 15 years, covering wars large and small in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Congo, Sri Lanka, Iraq, southwestern Turkey and northeastern Iran.

"The Resilience of Chinese Communism: Lessons From History," April 20

Based on her forthcoming book “The Resilience of Chinese Communism: Mining the Anyuan Revolutionary Tradition,” Harvard-Yenching Institute director Elizabeth Perry will draw contemporary lessons from the history of the revolution and its later interpretations. Her lecture takes place at noon on Friday, April 20 (room location to be announced).
