With the new year and new semester underway, I'm excited to share with you this issue of Emory Update, showcasing the university's top news and most inspiring stories. Every day, our faculty, staff and students strive to make a difference here and around the world -- from a drug discovery that has helped thousands of people with HIV live longer, healthier lives to a former child soldier's quest to earn a master's degree at Emory so he can return to help others in his home country.   Thank you for taking the time to learn about Emory and for your support as we work together to serve our communities. IMPACT & INNOVATION   RESEARCH Making the future Hundreds of faculty and student researchers at Emory are focused on solving the critical problems of our time and collaborating with peers around the globe to tease out the next potential blockbuster innovation. BREAKTHROUGH Emory mathematician ignites acclaim for one of year's top discoveries Discover Magazine names Emory mathematician Hao Huang's proof of the sensitivity conjecture one of the "Top 50 Science Stories That Matter" for 2019 and Popular Mechanics calls it one of "The 10 Biggest Math Breakthroughs" of the year. DISCOVERY Dogs process numerical quantities in similar brain region as humans Dogs spontaneously process basic numerical quantities, using a distinct part of their brains that corresponds closely to number-responsive neural regions in humans, finds a study by Gregory Berns, Emory professor of psychology. INSIGHT Former child soldier studies global development at Emory to give back Garang Buk Buk Piol was once a child soldier in Sudan. Today, he is pursuing a master's degree in global development at Emory so he can return to foster social and economic progress in his home country.

IN THE COMMUNITY   EMPOWERMENT 50 diverse Atlanta small businesses selected for support through Emory’s Start:ME program Start:ME, led by Goizueta Business School, offers free training for small business owners in East Lake, Clarkston and Southside Atlanta. Businesses in the 2020 cohort represent a broad spectrum from baking to fitness to farming and beyond. COLLABORATION DeKalb County Schools, Emory to establish school-based health centers Healthy students are more likely to come to school, remain engaged and excel academically. Six new school-based health centers developed by Emory and the DeKalb County School District will help improve students’ overall health and well-being. INSPIRATION Emory to host new cutting-edge science exhibition venue In partnership with Science Gallery International, Emory will create and curate an immersive exhibition space in Atlanta designed to inspire young adults in the sciences and arts. HEALTH CARE St. Francis Hospital joins new joint venture by Emory Healthcare and LifePoint Health Emory Healthcare and LifePoint Health’s new joint venture will enhance access to and delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care for residents in Columbus, Georgia, and surrounding communities.

ON CAMPUS   ACHIEVEMENT A strong start: Emory welcomes first students in Class of 2024 On Dec. 11, 730 students were admitted to Emory College, Oxford College or both. These outstanding Early Decision I applicants join 29 students who matched to Emory through QuestBridge, which links talented low-income scholars with leading universities, to start the Class of 2024. OUTREACH New arts leader aims to create thriving arts culture at Emory and beyond As vice provost for the arts, Kevin C. Karnes will work with faculty, students and staff to bolster Emory’s focus on the arts and grow the university’s engagement in Atlanta and beyond.
