RESEARCH
Emory psychologists explore acoustics of a primal human call: the scream
Screams are prompted by a variety of emotions, from surprise to terror. But no matter what sparks them, human screams share distinctive acoustic parameters that listeners are attuned to, suggests a new study from the lab of psychologist Harold Gouzoules.

INVOLVEMENT
University recognized for student voter turnout in midterm elections
Both the Atlanta and Oxford campuses recently received awards for high student participation during the 2018 midterm elections. Volunteers hope to further increase involvement by faculty, staff and students in 2020.

HEALTH
How cells respond to treadmill test can predict cardiac outcomes
Future outcomes can be predicted by signs of cardiac stress that appear in the blood in response to exercise, Emory cardiologists report.

CONNECTIONS
New English faculty bring expertise in digital humanities
Professors Lauren Klein and Dan Sinykin are pioneers in the emerging field of applying quantitative methods to literary analysis. Their work uses computers to help spot patterns in massive amounts of literature, unearthing never-told stories.
