MILESTONE Emory University undergraduate applications reach new record high Emory University has received a record 27,982 applications to be part of the Class of 2022, a 16 percent jump from the previous year. Learn more about the students who applied and were accepted this year. TEACHING Class looks at fake archeological stories to understand modern thinking In "Archaeology: Modern Myths, Pseudo-Science and the Study of the Past," classics professor Sandra Blakely's students learn analytical skills that can help them evaluate not only archaeological theories, but also today's "fake news." DISCOVERY Joint supplement speeds melanoma cell growth Cancer researchers found that chondroitin sulfate, a dietary supplement taken to strengthen joints, can speed the growth of a type of melanoma in experiments conducted in cell culture and mouse models. ADVOCACY Federal omnibus spending bill includes victories for research, education programs President Trump recently signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act, containing all 12 appropriations bills for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2018. Thanks to the efforts of advocates across the country, the new law provides the largest research funding increase in nearly a decade. INSIGHT Historian Taylor Branch to discuss Martin Luther King Jr., James Weldon Johnson Taylor Branch, acclaimed for his narrative histories of America during the King years, visits Emory on Thursday, April 5, to deliver the annual James Weldon Johnson Distinguished Lecture. Emory Insider: Community   Remembering MLK: On Wednesday, the clock towers on Emory's Atlanta and Oxford campuses will chime 39 times at 7:05 p.m. to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. King was 39 years old when he was murdered in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.
