MEDICINE Winship gives new meaning to the 'Big C' Winship Cancer Institute has been granted Comprehensive Cancer Center status by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the highest designation given by the NCI. What does that mean -- for Emory, for patients, for Georgia and for cancer research? ARTS New film series explores 'Black Lives on the Small Screen' Curated by film studies professor Beretta E. Smith-Shomade, this semester's Emory Cinematheque series looks at television created for, targeted toward and most often written by African Americans. COLLABORATION Georgia Research Alliance universities sign agreement to share core facilities Research leaders from the eight universities in the Georgia Research Alliance have signed a memorandum of understanding for the shared use of core research facilities at each of their institutions. EVENTS Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor discussion rescheduled at Emory Law Sonia Sotomayor, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, will participate in a discussion with Emory Law professor Fred Smith Jr. at an event for the law school community on Tuesday, Feb. 6. This new platform is accessible via desktop and a free mobile app. PSYCHOLOGY New research aims to understand how genetic differences contribute to addiction Psychology professor Rohan Palmer has earned a five-year, $2.34 million grant to examine why some people become addicted to alcohol or drugs, while others don't. His novel project involves both graduate and undergraduate student researchers.
