RESEARCH Brazilian peppertree packs power to knock out antibiotic-resistant bacteria The berries of the Brazilian peppertree contain an extract that can disarm dangerous antibiotic-resistant staph bacteria, Emory ethnobotanist Cassandra Quave has discovered. The plant is a weedy, invasive species in Florida, but valued by traditional healers in the Amazon. HEALTH CARE Emory Transplant Center performs its first HIV-positive kidney transplant from HIV-positive donor An HIV-positive patient has received a kidney transplant from an HIV-positive deceased donor, the first transplant of its kind for Emory and Georgia. The surgery was made possible by the HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act. NATURE Emory paleontologist explores 'the world beneath our feet' Anthony Martin's new book, "The Evolution Underground," offers a tour of the underworld, from tiny tunnels drilled by modern-day earthworms to massive paleo-burrows excavated by the Pleistocene's giant sloths. INSIGHT Israeli author Grossman to speak on Holocaust, memory and meaning Internationally acclaimed Israeli writer David Grossman will speak on "The Holocaust's Carrier Pigeon: Reflections on Writing and Memory" for Emory's 20th annual Tenenbaum Family Lecture in Judaic Studies, set for Feb. 28. TECHNOLOGY Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital first in Georgia to offer advanced radiosurgery for the brain Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital is the first hospital in the state and one of only seven medical centers in the nation to offer advanced radiosurgery for the brain with the Gamma Knife Icon. COMMUNITY International Voices Project explores diverse student experiences The International Student Leadership and Advocacy Board recently completed its annual International Voices Project, featuring photos and stories from students across Emory who come from diverse cultural backgrounds.
