LEADERSHIP Stuart Zola becomes interim provost of Emory University Emory President-elect Claire E. Sterk has announced the appointment of Stuart Zola, one of the nation's leading neuroscientists, as interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. With a long history of service at Emory, Zola assumed his new role Aug. 15. LEADERSHIP Elliott named interim dean of Emory College Almost two decades ago, Michael Elliott joined the Emory faculty as an English professor, drawn by the University's strong commitment to both teaching and research. Now he is taking the helm of Emory College as interim dean. COMMUNITY Oxford College to hold memorial service for students killed in Bangladesh A memorial service will be held at Oxford College on Sunday, Aug. 28, for students Abinta Kabir and Faraaz Hossain, who were killed over the summer in a terrorist attack in Dhaka, Bangladesh. RESEARCH A dog's dilemma: Do canines prefer praise or food? Given the choice, many dogs prefer praise from their owners over food, suggests a new study by Emory neuroscientist Gregory Berns. MEDICINE Two sisters, a shared rare disorder, and Emory Faced with two children with neurodevelopmental disorders of unknown origin, Pam and Tony Stinchcomb came to Emory for whole exome sequencing, which can pinpoint the origins of rare genetic diseases. OUTREACH Pre-college program allows students to 'test out' Emory Participants in the Pre-College Program, now in its ninth year, come from across the country and around the world to take credit and non-credit courses, get a preview of college life and gain an advantage in learning what colleges are looking for in an applicant. SCHOLARSHIP Dinosaur tracks lead paleontologist through museum to mentor's discovery The latest paper by Emory paleontologist Anthony Martin describes the first dinosaur tracks found in Victoria, Australia, back in the 1980s and explains their importance. BACK TO SCHOOL Emory prepares to welcome new students to campus As hundreds of first-year students move into campus residence halls this weekend, they will be greeted by enthusiastic volunteers and a busy schedule of orientation activities designed to create connections within the campus community.
