COMMUNITY Emory honors veterans and their service For Veterans Day, get to know just a few of the many students, faculty and staff who bring their military experience to the university's mission to “create, preserve, teach, and apply knowledge in the service of humanity.” A ceremony is scheduled Thursday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. on the Emory Quadrangle. ACTIVITIES 10 free things to do on campus in November Campus activities this month range from thought-provoking lectures to immersive drama experiences and multiple concerts, including a joint performance by Emory’s symphony orchestra and wind ensemble on Nov. 20. ATHLETICS Eagles advance to NCAA tournaments; Emory to host volleyball and men’s soccer opening rounds Emory’s volleyball, men’s soccer and women’s soccer teams have advanced to compete in their respective NCAA Division III championship tournaments, with Emory hosting opening NCAA rounds for both volleyball and men’s soccer later this week. ENVIRONMENT Emory joins Race to Zero, Climate Leadership Network to reduce carbon emissions After meeting with student leaders in the Emory Climate Coalition, President Gregory L. Fenves joined Race to Zero, an alliance of educational institutions devoted to achieving zero carbon emissions. SERVICE There's still time to participate in Emory Cares Day Give back to the community through Emory Cares Day on Saturday, Nov. 13. IMPACT United Kingdom becomes first country to approve Emory-discovered drug for COVID-19 An Emory-invented antiviral treatment for COVID-19 has been authorized by British regulators, making molnupiravir the first antiviral pill approved for use against SARS-CoV-2. An emergency use application is also under consideration by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. CONNECTIONS New Emory program explores ‘LINCs’ between courses in different disciplines Neuroscience and human health. Differential mathematics and dance. Atmospheric chemistry and German studies. Through the Learning through Inclusive Collaboration Initiative, students and faculty in paired classes come together to explore real-world problems through interdisciplinary perspectives.

EMORY INSIDER   First-Gen Week: Celebrate Emory’s first-generation community Nov. 8-12 with other first-gen students, faculty and staff. In partnership with campus offices and first-gen undergraduate and graduate student groups, Emory First-Gen Week will feature opportunities to learn more about first-gen resources and communities at Emory as well as panels, receptions and meet-ups. When: Nov. 11, 7:30 p.m. Where: Online Admission: Free; registration required Lecture: "Agency and Power: Black Women in Politics" with Pearl Dowe Dowe discusses her current book project on the role of Black women in American politics with Andra Gillespie, director of the James Weldon Johnson Institute. Part of the “First Fridays at 4” lecture series, where Emory professors share their latest research on topics related to race, difference and equity (program was rescheduled). When: Nov. 12, 4:00 p.m. Where: Online Admission: Free; registration required An Evening with William Cope Moyers Bestselling author and national recovery advocate Moyers will share his personal story of overcoming addiction. A former Atlantan and CNN journalist, Moyers is a vice president at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and was a key player in the creation of the Addiction Alliance of Georgia, a recently formed partnership between Hazelden Betty Ford and Emory Healthcare.
