COMMITMENT Emory president updates actions university is taking for racial justice In a community message, President Gregory L. Fenves discusses progress on the path to make Emory more inclusive. Steps include reappointing the Task Force on Untold Stories and Disenfranchised Populations, establishing the Descendants Endowment and launching the University Committee on Naming Honors. INTERNATIONAL Emory celebrates Global Diversity Awareness Month Misael Romero-Reyes, a chemistry PhD student in Laney Graduate School, is among the Emory students, faculty and staff members featured in the #GlobalDiversity2020 social media campaign. ARTS Emory University Symphony Orchestra plays from around the world during Oct. 24 concert The Emory University Symphony Orchestra will present its first concert of the academic year on Saturday, Oct. 24. Featuring material recorded during the spring and fall, the virtual concert showcases Emory student musicians performing from their homes around the globe. LEGACY 39th Carter Town Hall features message from President Carter, questions with grandson Jason Carter With health in mind, Emory’s 39th annual Carter Town Hall was held virtually, as students watched a special message from Emory professor and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, then heard his eldest grandson, Jason Carter, answer their questions live. CLASSROOM New hip-hop class reinforces the power of community through dance Alumnus Julio Medina returned to campus last year as faculty with the Emory Dance Program. He’s already breaking new ground for the university, helping students connect through Emory’s first course in hip-hop dance. FACULTY Stewart’s new book ‘Black Women, Black Love’ examines African American marriage Emory professor Dianne Stewart’s latest book, “Black Women, Black Love: America’s War on African American Marriage,” is a new look at a troubling topic and evolved from her own teaching, research and support of friends and colleagues. CONNECTIONS Minority-owned businesses get a boost from MBA students Each year, Goizueta MBA students work closely with a range of companies and organizations on strategies to solve real-world business problems. These projects are part of Goizueta IMPACT, an approach to experiential learning that bridges theory to practice. (Photo taken in December 2019.)

HOMECOMING 2020   Emory celebrates Homecoming Oct. 19-25 with a wide range of activities for students and friends of the university. Most events will be held virtually. Highlights include a musical showcase featuring stars from Broadway’s “Hamilton” and Emory alumni bands Indigo Girls and the Shadowboxers. Featured Events   Homecoming Highlight: “SKITFest: A Twist on Emory's Beloved Songfest Tradition” A spinoff of Songfest, SKITFest will feature skit and music video performances from all first-year residence halls and live judging from Emory VIPs, including President Gregory L. Fenves, Interim Provost Jan Love, and Vice President and Dean of Campus Life Enku Gelaye. When: Oct. 23, 8:00 p.m. Where: Online Admission: Free; registration required Homecoming Highlight: "Musical Showcase" Gather around the computer to hear Sydney Harcourt and Lexi Lawson reprise their Broadway roles from "Hamilton" and share stories about their experiences. The musical journey will also feature exclusive performances by two Emory-born groups: Grammy Award-winning folk-rock duo Indigo Girls and the Shadowboxers.
