COMMUNITY Emory responds to coronavirus with empathy, support "The outbreak of the novel coronavirus is a reminder of how connected we are as a global community," notes President Claire E. Sterk, emphasizing Emory's support for Chinese students, researchers and faculty who are concerned for friends and family back home. RESEARCH Emory, collaborators testing antiviral drug as potential treatment for coronaviruses An antiviral compound, discovered here, is being developed by Drug Innovation Ventures at Emory to potentially treat the new coronavirus currently spreading around the globe. RECOGNITION Emory to mark Black History Month with lectures, films and more Numerous events on campus will commemorate Black History Month, ranging from lectures on racial issues to film screenings and the opportunity to from the first black woman to graduate from Emory's School of Medicine. INSPIRATION New space for students expands Emory’s innovation ecosystem The Hatchery, Emory's new student innovation center, opens its doors in mid-February, joining the university's thriving environment of creativity and discovery. RESOURCES Review safety steps during Severe Weather Awareness Week February 3-7 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Georgia. Learn about steps you can take to be prepared in case of emergencies, such as downloading Emory’s safety app, LiveSafe. CONNECTIONS How personality predicts seeing others as sex objects Several personality traits related to psychopathy — especially being openly antagonistic — predict a tendency to view others as merely sex objects, finds a study by psychologists at Emory. CREATIVITY February brings brand-new theater and musical collaborations to campus Emory is bustling with exciting events for arts enthusiasts this month, from original plays and thought-provoking lectures to concerts with two legendary musicians: saxophonist Bob Mintzer and classical guitarist Pablo Sáinz Villegas. MILESTONE New Oxford Student Center opens to enhance student experiences For the first time in its history, Oxford College has a place built specifically to support the life of students outside the classroom.
