ACHIEVEMENT Emory junior selected as 2017 Truman Scholar Chelsea Jackson, who has persistently advocated for a more equitable Emory campus and Atlanta community, is one of only 62 students around the country to be named a 2017 Harry S. Truman Scholar. ADVOCACY Research funding pits White House against Congress Any cuts to science and research would slow medical progress, eliminate jobs, threaten the careers of young scientists, minimize our nation's standing as a global innovation leader and compromise other key American priorities. IMPACT Recent graduate's STEM nonprofit continues to grow links with Emory Kwadwo Sarpong, who graduated from Emory in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in neuroscience and behavioral biology, is co-founder of a nonprofit providing hands-on research experience to aspiring female scientists in Africa. COMMUNITY Ready, set, go! for Heel to Heal Superhero 5K and Fundraiser On Saturday, the Emory Physician Assistant Program hosts the 16th annual Heel to Heal Superhero 5K and Fundraiser. Funds help provide free health care to farm workers in South Georgia and underserved communities in Atlanta. RESEARCH Frog slime kills flu virus A component of the skin mucus secreted by South Indian frogs can kill the H1 variety of influenza viruses, researchers from Emory Vaccine Center and the Rajiv Gandhi Center for Biotechnology in India have discovered. SCHOLARSHIP 'Executing Freedom' examines the evolving role of the death penalty Emory history professor Daniel LaChance's debut book looks at more than 50 years of shifting American culture and how it has altered perceptions of the death penalty. LITERATURE Poets Emily Leithauser, Richie Hofmann to give free reading Two poets with Emory connections will present a free reading and discussion on April 25 in the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library. SAFETY Oxford campus drill tests emergency preparedness Student and staff volunteers, first responders and members of Emory's Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response recently staged the first ever full-scale emergency preparedness drill on the campus of Emory's Oxford College. IN CLASS For Emory undergrads, learning new perspectives on health is easy as 1, 2, 3 To change the way college students talk about health, the first step is for students to do the talking. That's the innovative approach of Emory's peer-taught Health 1,2,3 Program.
